The worst excuse for loosing the fish is that “my knot broke”. The success and failure of catching the fish depends on how a knot is tied. And this one small knot can make a world of difference to your fishing trip. A poorly tied knot will cost you to loose a fish and will bring frustration for you. Therefore, it is better to learn to tie the fly fishing knots.

Moisten the knot with water or saliva before tightening it. This will decrease the heat. While tightening the heat is generated due to friction. The heat generated weakens the monofilament. For good and strong knots, moisture is necessary because it reduces the heat and the knot does not open.

Tightening the knot with a steady pull is called seating the knot. The knots are the weakest part of the fishermen’s equipment .A fisherman has to be extremely careful while tying fly fishing knots. A fighting fish in the net will try every link in between the angler and itself. Learning to tie the knots is an important part of fly fishing.

A no. of fly fishing knots are used for fly fishing. Some of them are discussed below:

Reel Knot: It is a simple and reliable knot used to secure backing line to the reel. Trim the loose end but not too close to the knot.

Constriction knot: It is one of the simplest methods of attaching the backlines – nylon, Dacron or a twisted nylon to the traditional PVC coated terylene core fly line. Neither it should be used with hollow braided nylon nor is it suitable for modern monofilament cores.

Gray’s Loop: It is a version of constriction knot. It is used to attach a semi- permanent loop of nylon monofilament to the end of PVC coated terylene.

Perfection Loop: It is used for forming a loop in a nylon leader. The loose end can be trimmed very close to the knot.

Water Knot: It is used for forming droppers in a leader. It is one of the most the most reliable and strong fly fishing knots. Although the advice is for three turns but two turns are also quite reliable.

Due to the limited fishing equipments, fly fishing stands above other forms of fishing, allowing greater stretches in river to be explored. It is not only important to tie the perfect fly fishing knots but getting yourself equipped with right type of fly fishing equipment. Rod, Reel and Line are the equipments to name a few.

The rod that you are using should be comfortable to hold .Select the fly fishing rod that is easy for you to hold. Most of the rods available in the market today allow you to feel the fish taking the bait.

There are three main types of reel – baitcasting reels, spinning reels and spincast reels. The choice of reels depends upon individual preferences and comfort.

Lines used for fly fishing are mainly made from nylon. Other lines like braided, fused or co-filament are also becoming popular. Make the line of your choice but make sure that it is premium line. Premium lines are durable and cheaper than other lines.
